What is WebP and why convert it to JPG?

WebP is a modern image format created by Google in 2010. It is designed to produce smaller file sizes than JPEG and PNG while maintaining similar visual quality. Most modern web browsers support WebP natively, and it has become the default export format for many design tools and websites.

Despite its advantages, WebP is not universally supported. Older software, certain email clients, some social media platforms, and many business applications still expect images in JPG format. Converting WebP to JPG makes your image compatible with virtually any device or application that handles images.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG does not support transparency. If your WebP image has a transparent background, QuickImgPress automatically fills those transparent areas with white when converting to JPG. If preserving transparency is important, use the JPG to PNG converter instead, as PNG supports transparent backgrounds.

Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?

A small quality reduction is possible because JPG uses lossy compression. However, QuickImgPress uses a high quality setting of 92 percent by default. At this level, the output JPG is visually indistinguishable from the original WebP for the vast majority of images.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to convert WebP files on QuickImgPress?
Yes. Your file is never uploaded to any server. The entire conversion happens inside your browser using the Canvas API, so your image cannot be accessed or stored by anyone else.
Can I convert multiple WebP files at once?
Currently QuickImgPress converts one file at a time. After downloading your JPG, click "Convert another image" to start again with a new file.
Will the JPG have the same dimensions as the WebP?
Yes. The converted JPG will have exactly the same width and height as the original WebP file. Only the format changes, not the dimensions.
Why is my converted JPG larger than the original WebP?
WebP is a more efficient format than JPG at equivalent quality. It is normal for a JPG converted from WebP to be slightly larger in file size than the original WebP. If file size is a priority, compress the JPG after converting using the JPEG compressor.
What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The shorter extension JPG became common on older Windows systems that limited file extensions to three characters. They are identical in every other way.
